
1. Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine
A grand shrine dedicated to Okuninushi, the deity of connections. The enormous sacred rope at the Kaguraden is a highlight.

A beach where deities are welcomed during Kamiarizuki. It is also known for sunsets around the small Bentenjima rock island.

Japan’s tallest stone-built lighthouse, with an observation deck overlooking the cliffs of the Sea of Japan.

Beside Izumo Taisha, this museum displays 358 National Treasure bronze swords, bronze bells and the shrine’s massive ancient pillars.

A traditional wooden station building dating from 1924, designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

An old shrine dedicated to Susanoo, with a cedar said to be about 1,300 years old behind the main sanctuary.

A gorge along the Kando River, with rock faces 100–200 metres high extending for about 2 kilometres. A popular place for autumn foliage.

The Yakumo limited express runs directly from Okayama to Izumoshi. From Fukuoka, change at Shin-Yamaguchi to the Super Oki limited express. The overnight Sunrise Izumo sleeper runs directly from Tokyo to Izumoshi.

From Izumoshi Station, take a bus towards Izumo Taisha (about 25 minutes). Alternatively take Ichibata Railway to Izumo Taisha-mae Station, changing at Kawato.
